- Description: Questions about screening, facilitator experience, staffing, emergency planning, preparation and integration to ask before choosing an ayahuasca retreat.
- Author: Mark Lorello

A polished website or a kind review can’t tell you everything about a retreat.

Ask practical questions, look for clear answers and take your time before you commit. This checklist helps with that conversation, but it can’t certify that any retreat is safe.

## Participant screening

- What information does the intake collect?
- Who reviews health history and medications?
- When is professional clearance requested?
- How are changes before attendance handled?

Read the organization’s screening information and discuss personal health questions with a qualified healthcare professional. [Read AyaWaken’s screening overview](https://www.aya-waken.com/safety-information/).

## Facilitator experience and accountability

- Who will actually be present for the ceremony?
- What training, apprenticeship and continuing study can they describe?
- Which teachers or traditions inform their work?
- How can participants raise concerns?

Experience is one consideration, not a guarantee. Named teachers and specific training histories are more useful than broad claims of mastery. [Explore AyaWaken’s teachers and lineage](https://www.aya-waken.com/teachers/).

## Staffing and response plans

- How many participants and support staff will attend?
- What are each person’s responsibilities and relevant qualifications?
- How is assistance requested during a ceremony?
- What is the emergency-response plan and access to outside care?

Ask for the actual arrangements. Do not assume medical staff, certifications or emergency capabilities are present because the setting is described as a retreat.

## Preparation, boundaries and expectations

- What preparation instructions are provided?
- What conduct and consent boundaries apply?
- Are questions welcomed without pressure to book?
- Are limitations and uncertainties explained?

## Integration and booking terms

- What support is included after the weekend?
- Who leads it, and when does it happen?
- What costs are included or separate?
- What are the cancellation and travel terms?

At AyaWaken, you can begin with our [weekend overview](https://www.aya-waken.com/weekend/), [integration information](https://www.aya-waken.com/integration/) and [cancellation policy](https://www.aya-waken.com/cancellation-policy/). Confirm the details for your dates directly with our team.

## Keep asking until the details are clear

A responsible decision leaves room for questions and time to consider the answers. Spiritual intention, experience and screening cannot eliminate every risk or guarantee a particular result.

## Legal context and travel plans

Ask what legal basis applies to the organization’s activities and what documentation supports it. Church or nonprofit status alone does not answer that question. Our [USA legal FAQ](https://www.aya-waken.com/blog/can-you-drink-ayahuasca-in-the-usa-legal-safety-faq/) provides official starting points for further questions.

Confirm your acceptance, date, lodging and transport before committing to travel. Do not stop or change prescribed medication without consulting your prescribing clinician.
